Transfer eSIM Between Devices: Complete Guide

Step-by-step instructions for moving eSIM profiles between iPhones, between Android devices, and critically — what to do when switching from iPhone to Android or vice versa.

⚠️ Critical: Cross-Platform Transfers

Native eSIM transfer between different operating systems (iOS ↔ Android) is NOT supported by Apple, Google, or Samsung. The "Transfer eSIM" feature works only between devices running the same OS. If you're switching from iPhone to Android (or vice versa), skip to the Cross-Platform Transfer section below.

Same-OS eSIM Transfer

iPhone → iPhone (iOS 16+ required)

  1. On old iPhone: Settings → Cellular → tap the eSIM you want to transfer.
  2. Tap Transfer to New iPhone and follow prompts.
  3. On new iPhone: When prompted, confirm the transfer request.
  4. Wait 1-2 minutes for the eSIM to appear on the new device.
  5. The old eSIM will be automatically deactivated.

✅ Works with eSimTrip eSIMs that support transfer (most do). Both devices must be signed into the same Apple ID with two-factor authentication.

Samsung Galaxy → Samsung Galaxy (One UI 5.1+)

  1. On old phone: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → tap the eSIM.
  2. Tap Transfer eSIM or Move to another device.
  3. A QR code will appear. On new phone: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM → Scan QR code.
  4. Complete the transfer on the new device.

Google Pixel → Google Pixel (Android 13+)

  1. During Pixel setup, you'll be prompted to transfer eSIMs from your old Pixel.
  2. Alternatively, use Settings → Network & internet → Mobile network → Carrier → Transfer eSIM.

Cross-Platform Transfer: iOS ↔ Android

Since native transfer is not supported, you need your eSIM provider's assistance. eSimTrip offers two methods to migrate your eSIM to a new device, even when switching between iPhone and Android.

Method 1: Re-download via your eSimTrip account (recommended)

Log into your eSimTrip account on the new device. Navigate to "My eSIMs" and find your active plan. Tap "Reinstall" or "Get new QR code". The old eSIM will be automatically deactivated, and a new profile will be issued for your new device. Your remaining data and validity period are preserved.

Method 2: Contact support

If you no longer have access to your account, email support@esimtrip.com with your order number and new device EID. We'll issue a replacement QR code within 2 hours.

Important: Your eSIM plan's remaining data and validity period will be preserved when transferring. However, each eSIM can only be active on one device at a time.

What Cannot Be Transferred

  • Expired eSIMs — cannot be reactivated on any device.
  • Deleted eSIMs — unless the provider stores a backup (eSimTrip does for 30 days).
  • Carrier-locked eSIMs — some carrier-specific eSIMs cannot be transferred to devices from other carriers.
  • eSIMs from providers without reinstall support — always check before purchasing.

Best Practices for eSIM Transfer

Before switching: Deactivate the eSIM from old device settings if possible.
Keep confirmation emails: They contain QR codes and manual details for reinstallation.
Don't delete the eSIM from old device until confirmed working on new device.
For cross-platform: Use eSimTrip account re-download feature.
Test before traveling: Transfer eSIMs at home with Wi-Fi available.
Save new QR code offline after transfer in case you need to reinstall.

Troubleshooting

❌ "This eSIM cannot be transferred"

The eSIM may be locked to the original device's EID. Contact eSimTrip support for a replacement.

❌ Transfer QR code not working

Ensure the new device has an active internet connection (Wi-Fi). Some eSIMs require the old device to be nearby.

❌ eSIM shows "No Service" after transfer

Restart the new device. If the problem persists, the eSIM may need to be reactivated by the provider — contact support.

❌ Lost access to old device before transferring

Request a new QR code from eSimTrip via your account or support. The old eSIM will be invalidated automatically.
