What is Dual eSIM?
Dual eSIM capability allows a device to keep two eSIM profiles active simultaneously. This is distinct from simply storing multiple eSIMs — which most modern phones support — but only activating one at a time.
Benefits of Dual eSIM
Voice & SMS
Keep your primary number active
Receive calls and SMS on your home number while using travel eSIM for data.
Multi-country
Combine multiple travel eSIMs
Use one eSIM for country A and another for country B without manual switching.
Work & life
Separate work and personal lines
Maintain two distinct numbers on the same device.
Hybrid
Physical SIM + eSIM combo
On devices with a physical SIM slot, you can add an eSIM as a second line.
Device Compatibility
iPhone
iPhone 13 and newer (iOS 17+) support dual active eSIM. US models of iPhone 14, 15, and 16 have no physical SIM tray and rely entirely on dual eSIM.
Samsung Galaxy
Galaxy S23 series and newer (One UI 6.0+) support dual active eSIM. S22 and older support only one active eSIM at a time.
Google Pixel
Pixel 7 and newer (Android 14+) support dual active eSIM. Pixel 6 and older support only one active eSIM.
Setting Up Dual eSIM on iPhone
- Install both eSIM profiles via Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM (QR code or manual entry).
- Label each eSIM clearly (e.g., "eSimTrip Japan", "Primary Number").
- Go to Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data → select which eSIM provides internet.
- Go to Settings → Cellular → Default Voice Line → select which eSIM handles calls and SMS.
- Optionally enable Allow Cellular Data Switching to automatically use the best available data line.
Travel tip: Set your home eSIM as the voice line (to receive calls) and your eSimTrip travel eSIM as the data line. Disable data roaming on your home eSIM to avoid unexpected charges.
Setting Up Dual eSIM on Android (Samsung)
- Go to Settings → Connections → SIM Manager.
- Both eSIMs will appear as available lines.
- Tap Mobile data and select the eSIM you want for internet.
- Tap Calls and Messages to assign per eSIM.
- Enable Data switching if you want automatic fallback.
Google Pixel: Settings → Network & internet → Mobile network → choose which eSIM for data vs calls.
Practical Use Cases for Dual eSIM
- Travel + Home: Keep your primary number active for 2FA codes and calls while using a local travel eSIM for affordable data.
- Multi-country trips: Install eSIMs for each country and set the active one based on your location.
- Work + Personal: Separate work number and personal number on the same device without carrying two phones.
- Testing networks: Compare coverage and speed between two different eSIM providers.
Limitations & Considerations
- Both eSIMs may share the same modem — heavy usage on one can affect the other.
- Some carriers restrict dual eSIM functionality (especially for voice lines).
- Battery life may decrease slightly with two active cellular connections.
- Not all eSIM providers support being used as the secondary line — eSimTrip does.
