๐Ÿ“ฑ iPhones that support eSIM

iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and newer models support eSIM. This includes iPhone SE (2020 and later), all iPhone 12โ€“16 series, and second-generation iPhone SE. Devices from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao may have different eSIM availability โ€” check your model before purchasing a plan.

What you'll need before you start

  • An eSIM plan from eSimTrip or another provider (purchased and ready to activate)
  • A stable Wi-Fi connection during setup
  • Your iPhone unlocked and updated to the latest iOS version
  • The QR code or activation details sent to your email

Method 1: Scan a QR code (most common)

This is the standard way most eSIM providers, including eSimTrip, deliver plans. Follow these steps:

  1. Open Settings โ†’ Cellular (or Mobile Service).
  2. Tap Add eSIM or Add Cellular Plan.
  3. Tap Use QR Code and scan the code sent by your provider.
  4. If prompted, enter the confirmation code (usually 4โ€“6 digits provided with your plan).
  5. Tap Add Cellular Plan to complete installation.

๐Ÿ’กCan't scan? Tap Enter Details Manually below the QR code frame. You'll need the SM-DP+ address and activation code from your provider.

Method 2: Install via eSimTrip app or link

Many modern eSIM providers, including eSimTrip, offer direct installation links. If you purchased through our app or website on your iPhone, you can often tap an "Install eSIM" button that automatically opens Settings and adds the plan โ€” no QR code required. This is the fastest method when available.

  • Check your confirmation email for an installation link.
  • Tap the link directly on your iPhone (must be the same device you plan to use).
  • Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm the installation.

Method 3: Transfer eSIM from another iPhone

If you're upgrading to a new iPhone and your carrier supports eSIM transfer, you can move your plan without contacting support. Both devices must be running iOS 16 or later and signed into the same Apple ID with two-factor authentication enabled.

  1. On your old iPhone: Go to Settings โ†’ Cellular โ†’ tap the eSIM you want to transfer.
  2. Tap Transfer to New iPhone and follow instructions.
  3. On your new iPhone: When prompted, confirm the transfer request.
  4. Wait for the plan to appear on your new device (may take a minute or two).

Labeling and configuring your eSIM

After adding an eSIM, iOS will ask you to assign a label. Choose something descriptive like "Travel Data" or "eSimTrip USA". This helps you identify the line later.

You can also set default lines for cellular data, calls, and messages. For travel eSIMs (data-only plans), we recommend:

  • Cellular Data: Your travel eSIM
  • Default Voice Line: Your primary number (if you want to keep receiving calls)
  • Allow Cellular Data Switching: Off (to avoid unexpected roaming charges)

Activating your eSIM at your destination

Most travel eSIMs activate when they first connect to a supported local network in your destination country. You can install the profile before departure, but data won't start until you arrive.

โœ… Do this before traveling:

Install the eSIM, label it, and turn off the line (optional). Keep Wi-Fi on at home.

โœ… Do this after arrival:

Go to Settings โ†’ Cellular โ†’ tap your eSIM โ†’ enable Turn On This Line. Data should connect within 1โ€“2 minutes.

Troubleshooting common issues

  • "Cellular plan cannot be added" โ€” Restart your iPhone and try scanning again. Ensure your device isn't carrier-locked.
  • No service after arrival โ€” Toggle Airplane Mode on/off, or manually select a network in Settings โ†’ Cellular โ†’ Network Selection.
  • QR code not working โ€” Request manual entry details (SM-DP+ and activation code) from your provider.
  • eSIM disappeared after iOS update โ€” Go to Settings โ†’ Cellular โ†’ Add eSIM โ†’ the plan may reappear under "Previous eSIMs."

Removing or resetting an eSIM

When your travel plan expires or you no longer need it, you can remove the eSIM from your iPhone:

  1. Go to Settings โ†’ Cellular.
  2. Tap the eSIM you want to remove.
  3. Scroll down and tap Remove Cellular Plan.
  4. Confirm removal. The eSIM profile will be deleted from your device.

โ„น๏ธNote: Removing an eSIM does not automatically refund your plan. Always check your provider's cancellation policy before removing.
